Engineers of Tomorrow, Today

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

Last time we spoke CalSol had just began its new semester along with a bevy of new goals. I’m happy to report that we are well on our way to achieving those!

Kids visiting CalSol's Solar Powered Radio

I’d like to thank everyone involved with Engineering 4 Kids (E4K). This was an event held last weekend in which a number of elementary schools from the Berkeley area brought 4th-6th graders to Berkeley to show them all the cool things that you can do with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This year E4K drew in 350 students and a lot of cool demonstrations from the student groups here on campus. Unfortunately due to issues with the weather, CalSol was unable to bring out one of our solar cars to show off, but with a solar powered radio, and some sample composites and plenty of pictures you can bet we had plenty of the kids swarming around our table with questions aplenty. We hope that a few of those kids came away from E4K with a thirst for even more engineering! You can bet CalSol will be at E4K again next year!

A Visit From Toshiba

Marc using our sponsored Portege intensely

At the end of January, CalSol had the privilege of hosting Josh Stempel of Toshiba. Toshiba has been an incredible sponsor, and we were thrilled to finally have one of their team members visiting us here in Berkeley.

Recently, CalSol has also been teaming up with Toshiba to organize a campus wide battery and electronics drive.  Alongside Berkeley’s Green the Greeks organization, CalSol is working to increase awareness for sustainable technology and environmental awareness. The battery and electronics drive will launch in early March, and conclude around Earth Day in April. Be sure to come back and check out our blog for more information later on!

We hope that Toshiba had a great time visiting the Richmond Field Station and seeing Impulse in person for the first time!

Accelerating Sustainable Performance 2011

Accelerating Sustainable Performance 2011

Green energy and competition collide at Infineon Raceway. We had the honor of attending Accelerating Sustainable Performance 2011, “A Summit for Industry Leaders in Sustainability and Performance”. The day-long event featured speakers from the racing industry, advocates for green energy, and representatives from corporations who share a common goal of making the racing industry sustainable while pushing the limits of vehicle technology. You may think that NASCAR racing and alternative energy come from industries that don’t mix, but this forum showed that we can push the limits and keep it green too. From energy generation, storage, and distribution to marketing and policy, the conversation traversed the entire entire spectrum of energy sustainability.

Impulse at Maker Faire

Friday, May 20th, 2011

We are very excited to announce that Impulse will be on display at the Maker Faire this weekend. Maker Faire is held at San Mateo Events Center and displays varying projects of lots of talented Makers.

CalSol will be showing off Impulse both days. We invite you to come by and check out the improvements and progress we have made to our electrical and mechanical systems. If you didn’t get to make it out to Cal Day, we would especially love to see you there to share our achievements and accomplishments!

Fun Cal Day Prep Video

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

The night leading up to Cal Day was a sleepless night for many on the team. Watch as our team worked (and danced) hard through the night as we ensured that all preparations were complete for our big unveiling event. We cranked up the music a bit in this vid, but I’m sure you’ll get to see more of what the team has to say in some of our next videos.
